- Do: Contribute on Topics of Your Interest
Now,
as you already know what you are looking for on Social Media, what do you do?
Have effective means of looking for that thing. And the most productive way is
by following pages of your interest. Join groups and contribute to topics that
interest you. If you are into investing you can join groups like “Investors
Group”, “Angel Investor Group”, and “Impact Investment Forum” on LinkedIn.
Business professionals who want to feel more “at home” can join “Kenya Business
Network” and “Nairobi Business Club”. Other Groups like “BH Group East-Africa”
help you create connections with people of the same interests as you and
better, if you are job hunting you can easily get hired by getting noticed by
other people.
There
is no exhausting how many groups are out there. You just need to go and join
them. Also, look on other platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
- Do: Follow Up on People
How
many times have you remembered someone from high school and wondered, “What
happened to that guy?” How many of your classmates know about what your job is
today? Or worse, do you know what six of your closest classmates back in the
day are doing now? We lose contact with people after a very short time. Even your
“inner circle” fades away. It’s not a bad idea to follow up on people. Lately I’ve
been following up on people and the reaction I get most of the time is “hey
man, how have you been? Long time…blah! Blah!” But I can always tell when the
person on the other side is just wondering, “What the hell does he want?” Because
they are simply not used to this and they think that the only reason why
someone from the past might be coming to them now is because they want a favor.
Like money. Don’t wait until you are “in a fix” so you can talk to your long
lost rich friend. Isn’t it better to keep contact so when you go broke you can
easily talk to them without feeling awkward?
The
truth is, people are not always on the level you expect them. Some are better
than you while some, well…they are not doing that good. It’s good to keep
contact with all the groups. But hold up…this does not mean you go looking for
the postal addresses of all your school mates. Just the closest ones. The people
you feel like it should not be the way it is with them. This is one step to
maximizing the usefulness of Social Media.
