Man is not an island to survive alone. The human being was
created to rely on others for survival. However, as time goes by, one learns
that the list of friends they have created is something that can be
prioritized. At the top end is the family that is almost equivalent to a man’s
soul. For the family a man is always willing to sacrifice the happiness of
friends at the bottom of the list for the sake of the family happiness if the
situation so demands. Of course the situation must not always demand we choose
between friends and family. From experience, it in many instances occurs, and
especially when it comes to making important life decisions, that we have to
choose between conflicting alternatives. At the extreme end it will be a
situation where we have to choose between us and others.
Experience has it that the individualism that accompanies
civilization heavily penalizes irrationality. In this regard, if you are too
weak to make decisions that favor you first it will mean that you have
surrendered the control of your own life to others. You cannot please everyone.
Besides, you are not the old wise man in the ancient stories who always had a solution
for every vagabond. Like a chess game, you are the king of your life and the
game cannot continue unless you are well protected. So shun off that fear, let
go of that friendship and demand of the society in favor of pursuing your own
destiny. Destiny is not something that is real, like many ‘soaps and movies’ would
like to portray. On the contrary, it is something that is controlled and made by
one’s decisions. The reason why the modern society is considered free is
because individuals are free, like atoms in a solid, and hence are influenced individually
by external changes. They therefore should not fear the bombardments with other
atoms on their way to the surface were they can enjoy free air flow and sunshine.
In conclusion, one need not be inconsiderate, but it always
has to be about you then the others. After all, you are on your own. Just like
in a chess game, friends should always be ranked in order of importance they
bring to your life. You should have many pawns, those whom you talk about weather,
football and all the nonsense but no attachments. Those you should find easy to
let go if they pretend to enter the inner circle of your life unless they
genuinely earn that. Then you must have the bishops and the knights who you are
attached to but can be sacrificed for the rooks, the queen and the king. The rooks
are your family and the queen your spouse. Remember that the rational elite
have mastered the game such that any piece can be sacrificed for the overall individual
success and they too don’t bother to be sacrificed. So from today you had
better learn what piece you are in your friend’s chess board where they are the
kings.
