Well, this is a fairly
simple question. Especially if you already know what
a social media manager is and what they do.
Let’s look at the two
main reasons why you should not consider hiring a social media manager. The
reverse of that will be exactly why you really need one.
You
have an unbeatable passion for social media engagement
This could be one reason
why you might decide to carry out your social media tasks in person.
This is not to mean,
however, that by delegating the social media tasks to someone else your brand
loses contact with the customer. In fact the major role of a social media
manager is to ensure that your company maintains and improves on the existing
contact.
But some business people
prefer to do it themselves. And that is good. If you are that person then most
probably you will outsource all other tasks and concentrate on social media.
However, this is not
always possible when the second statement is not true in your situation.
You
have enough time to handle social media and other tasks
If we all had enough time
in our hands then we probably would not have to hire other people-other factors
unchanged. Therefore, if you have time in your hands why spend money on someone
else? Do it yourself.
But most of the time this
will not be the case. You are obviously too busy doing something else to
maintain a constant schedule of social media time, leave alone studying your
audience online to know what works best.
Unless the two statements
are true for you then you really need a social media manager. The important
thing to note is that there is so much to do on social media that multitasking
would be difficult. Don’t try to multitask. If you decide to spend your time
online then be online. Otherwise you will end up messing things up.
The amount of freedom and
responsibility you give the manager will be up to you and your business. If you
see it fit to grant them full responsibility then by all means do. But first
spend some time with that person. Work with them for a significant period
before you think of increasing the freedom and responsibility. Just make sure
any change you make is called for. If there’s potential increase in benefits
then do it. If you don’t see any need, keep things as they are.
